Honors, awards and appointments

Applied Physics Lab

     Gwen Boyd of the Strategic Systems Department has been named
vice chairman for the Trustees Assembly for the United Way of the
National Capital Area. Boyd has been a Trustees Assembly member
for four years. 
     Assets manager Ron Cot‚ was elected vice president for
finance on the national executive board of the National Property
Management Association. He will serve two years in the new
position. He also received the 1994 Award of Merit for Literary
Excellence from the association. 
     Bruce Gotwols of the Space Department was awarded a
three-month Stuart Janney Fellowship to prepare a paper on a
joint U.S.-German experiment summarizing radar backscatter
statistics from a radar mounted on a tower 40 kilometers off the
German coast in the North Sea. 
     The International Academy of Astronautics has awarded Space
Department head Stamatios Krimigis the Space Science Award for
his achievements and works, which "added to the strength of the
Academy." 


Continuing Studies 

     Nancy R. Norris, director f the Master of Liberal Arts
Program and associate director of the Division of Liberal Arts,
was elected to a two-year term as secretary/treasurer of the
Association of Graduate Liberal Studies Pro- grams at its annual
conference in October. Medicine 
     Thomas D. Pollard, Bayard Halsted Professor of Cell Biology
and Anatomy, has been appointed to the National Advisory General
Medical Sciences Council. Members of the council, appointed for
four-year terms, review applications for research and research
training grants. 
     James R. Zabora, a research associate in Oncology and
director of patient and family services at the Oncology Center,
has received the 1994 Leadership in Oncology Social Work Award,
the highest honor presented by the Association of Oncology Social
Work. 


Peabody 

     The National Opera Association has selected With Blood, With
Ink as the first-place winner of its biannual competition for new
chamber operas. With Blood, With Ink premiered last year at the
Peabody when composer Daniel Crozier and librettist Peter Krask
were students at the school. The National Opera Association will
sponsor a fully staged performance of the work at its 1995
convention in Boston.


Changing places, new faces 

     Michael R. Grever has been appointed director of the newly
created Division of Hematologic Malignancies at the Oncology
Center. He comes to Hop-kins from the National Cancer Institute,
where he was associate director of the developmental therapeutics
program.
