New top Jay preps for season opener
The word "family" holds a prominent place above the message board in the men's lacrosse team's locker room these days. The term has become a familiar refrain for Blue Jays players and coaching staff alike this off-season and has come to symbolize a growing unity among the team.
   The principal purveyor of this family ethic is new head coach Dave Pietramala. Since being handed the head coaching reins in June, Pietramala says he and his staff have focused on building relationships with the players.
   Pietramala (pronounced Petra-mala), a 1990 Johns Hopkins graduate, is a firm believer that to get the most from a player, you must first win his trust and respect. Full story...

Director named for new office
A university-wide search committee has selected Ray Gillian, currently with the University of Maryland, College Park, to head up the new Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Programs. Gillian assumes the title of assistant provost and director, and will report to the provost.
   The new university-wide office will bring together and expand upon the current Affirmative Action Program, disability services and Sexual Harassment Prevention and Resolution Program.
   The assistant provost will provide leadership and direction to the university's efforts to promote institutional equality and a diverse Hopkins community. The primary responsibility of the post is to assure that the university's programs and procedures comply with federal, state and local laws and regulations related to affirmative action and equal opportunity.
