Season opens for top-ranked Blue Jays
Hopkins will play seven of its 12 games this year at Homewood Field


"Our scheduling philosophy is to play the most difficult schedule in the nation," says Dave Pietramala, right, now in his fifth season as head coach.

The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team enters its 118th season ranked No. 1 in a pre-season coaches' poll and confronted with arguably the nation's toughest schedule, which kicks off on Saturday at Princeton. The Blue Jays return eight starters from last season's team, which ended the regular season ranked No. 1 and earned the top seed in the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year.

APL contributions aid missile defense test
Thursday's successful Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense intercept test was due, in part, to the critical engineering and technical direction provided by the Applied Physics Laboratory. This milestone event marks the first demonstration of the Aegis BMD weapon system BMD 3.0 and the Standard Missile-3 Block I. As a result of this successful test, Aegis BMD capability is technically ready to respond to short-notice operational tasking to support contingency ballistic missile defense operations, if required.

JHU appoints senior director of benefits planning, administration
Heidi E. Conway, associate director of benefits services at Harvard University, has been named senior director of benefits planning and administration at The Johns Hopkins University. Conway, who joined Johns Hopkins Feb. 15, is responsible for shaping benefits packages offered to more than 14,000 university employees and for administration of those benefits.
