Philosophy Department Offers New Essay Prize To Its Grad Students Graduate students in philosophy are eligible to compete for a new prize announced by the department last week. The William Miller Essay Prize will be awarded annually for an essay of outstanding quality in any field of philosophy. The winner will receive $1,000 at an awards ceremony in April. Entrants must be registered graduate students in philosophy at the pre-dissertation stage of their graduate work. Submissions should be self-contained essays of no more than 10,000 words, to be handed in no later than 5 p.m. on March 15. Fifth-semester papers that satisfy the length requirement and were handed in on time will automatically be considered as submissions. Students wishing to supersede that submission may hand in a different or revised paper instead. Only one submission per student is allowed. The winner will be selected by the Philosophy Department as a whole, with the aid of a selection committee of three members of the department. Questions about the prize should be addressed to Susan Wolf. The William Miller Essay Prize is a gift of William Miller, president of the Legg Mason Fund Advisor. Miller did graduate work in philosophy at Hopkins from 1975 to 1978.
