Raising an African American Flag

Members of the Hopkins Homewood community joined several
dozen students from the Waverly Elementary School last week to
"raise" an African American flag created by one of their
teachers, Tonya Harvey. The flag celebrates all African cultures,
Harvey said, because many black Americans do not know their
country of origin. Sharon Winslow, another teacher at Waverly and
the teacher advocate for the Tutorial Project of the Office of
Volunteer Services, choreographed the two-day event, which
included singing and discussions about the students' African
heritage. The flag, which has been recognized by such groups as
the Black Caucus Foundation and the Baptist Ministers'
Conference, will remain on display on the second floor of
Levering Hall.
