United Way Kicks
Off 1997 Campaign

Cheryl Wagner admitted it took almost all her courage to address the crowd gathered in Shriver Hall auditorium to kick off the university's 1997 United Way campaign. The twice-divorced mother of two felt her discomfort was worth it, though, to tell how the United Way of Central Maryland had helped bring a "big brother" into the life of her son, Tim Shelton.

Wagner and Tim's big brother, Buzzy Buzzerd, echoed the campaign theme that it is through the power of "U" that the United Way brings services, like Big Brothers/Big Sisters, to our community.

At Shriver Hall faculty and staff were greeted by the Bay Street Brass Works and the children of the Lafayette Square Day Care Center, who handed out stickers with the 1997 logo: The Power of U.

Vic Carter, a news anchorman on Baltimore's WJZ-TV 13, spoke of his commitment to the community, serving wherever he has lived as a big brother, and he encouraged the university community not to be reluctant to reach out to help neighbors by giving to the United Way.

This year's campaign--chaired by James Neal, the Sheridan Director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library, and Robert Sirota, director of the Peabody Institute--combines all Hopkins entities, as they reach for a goal of $1,489,000: the university; Johns Hopkins Medicine and APL. At press time, the combined pledges had reached $319,388, 21.4 percent of the total goal.

Again this year, there will be a lottery drawing for those returning pledges or contributions of $35 or more. Lottery rules and prizes will be featured in next week's issue of The Gazette.
