Johns Hopkins Responds

Package Handling Advisory

November 12, 2001

Security at Johns Hopkins Medicine has received the following information, which is being forwarded herewith to other Johns Hopkins entities in our ongoing effort to keep all faculty and staff advised of events.

The National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association has alerted its membership and affiliated advocacy organizations that a number of Family Planning Councils and Planned Parenthood organizations in the northeastern United States have received anthrax threats delivered in Federal Express packages. These threats are alleged to have been sent by the Army of God.

Security at Johns Hopkins Medicine contacted the FBI for more information. The FBI said that a similar event had occurred in early October, and that testing for anthrax at that time was negative. No one who received or handled the packages in question became ill with anthrax.

There is no known threat to any Johns Hopkins entity. Employees are advised to continue to follow established protocol of contacting your campus security office should you come in contact with any suspicious substance or package, no matter what agency delivered it.

Previous communications about mail handling precautions are available online at www.jhu.edu/news_info/news/911/preparedness/mail1.html and www.jhu.edu/news_info/news/911/preparedness/mail3.html.

Sincerely,
Ronald J. Mullen
