Johns Hopkins Responds

Resources on Afghanistan and the Central Asia Region

Scholars from the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute (CACI) at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) published two reports earlier this year that could serve as useful resources for those interested in learning more about U.S. relations with Afghanistan and the Central Asia region. Both publications are available on the Web at www.cacianalyst.org.

1. "Strategic Assessment of Central Eurasia" published by CACI and the Atlantic Council of the United States at the request of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in February 2001.
This assessment outlines a basis for U.S. national security planning related to Central Eurasia over the next 10 years through analysis of the key threats and challenges to the region's stability and the conflicting and complementary interests of the major powers. It also compares alternative strategies and puts forth a strategic concept for the region. Authors: S. Frederick Starr and Charles Fairbanks, CACI; C. Richard Nelson and Kenneth Weisbrode, Atlantic Council Program on International Security.
See www.cacianalyst.org/Strategic_assessment.pdf.

2. "Twenty Theses on Afghanistan" prepared on May 18, 2001.
Author: S. Frederick Starr, CACI chairman. Starr offers to clarify the United States' thinking on relations with Afghanistan and its neighboring countries.
See www.cacianalyst.org/Publications/Afghanistan_Theses.htm.
