Information about Weather and the University-wide Commencement Ceremony

If it becomes necessary to cancel or curtail the 9:15 a.m. University-wide commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 22, announcements will be made here and on the Johns Hopkins Weather Emergency Line at 410-516-7781. If possible, the announcement will be made by 6:30 a.m..

In the event of drizzle or light rain, the ceremony will be held as planned. Rain ponchos will be distributed to the graduates and guests. Guests are also invited to use umbrellas.

If the ceremony is canceled due to more severe weather, there will be a ceremony for doctoral candidates and their guests in Shriver Hall on the southern end of the Homewood campus. In this case, only two guests can be accommodated per candidate in Shriver Hall.

All other degree candidates should go as planned to the diploma award ceremonies of their respective schools.

In the event of a Shriver Hall ceremony, doctoral candidates will robe and line up in Shaffer Hall, adjacent to Shriver Hall on the lower quadrangle. Robing and lineup for faculty will be in Shaffer 3. Robing and lineup for principals will be in the Shriver Hall board room.

In the event that suddenly arising weather conditions at Homewood Field make it unsafe to continue the ceremony once it has begun there, the ceremony may be adjourned. If this should occur, doctoral candidates may go immediately to the Goldfarb Gymnasium of the Newton H. White Athletic Center (next to Homewood Field) to pick up their diplomas. Guests are invited to meet graduates next door in the Robert Scott Gymnasium of the Ralph S. O'Connor Recreation Center.
