News Release
Gilbert Sandler, popular columnist for The Sun and The Baltimore Jewish Times, will give a lecture, "Jewish Baltimore: A Family Album," at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Shriver Hall on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles Street in Baltimore. Sandler's Johns Hopkins University Press book, of the same title as the lecture, will also be available for sale and signing. His talk will tell a story about Baltimore's Jewish community from the 1850s to today, told through the people who lived in neighborhoods like East Baltimore, Forest Park and Park Heights, and through landmarks like Nate's and Leon's Deli and Hutzler's Department Store. Sandler, born and raised in Baltimore, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree from The Johns Hopkins University. Following service as a ship's navigator in the U. S. Navy and a career in advertising and public relations, he wrote a weekly column called "Baltimore Glimpses" in The Evening Sun and later for The Sun for 25 years. Since 1997, he has also written about Baltimore's Jewish community for The Baltimore Jewish Times. His other books are The Neighborhood: The Story of Baltimore's Little Italy and Baltimore Glimpses Revisited. This lecture is part of the Wednesday Noon Series presented by the Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events, now in its 35th season of cultural programming on the Homewood campus. This event is cosponsored with the Johns Hopkins University Press and admission is free. For information, call the Office of Special Events at 410-516-7157.
