News Release
The nationally acclaimed troupe known as the Capitol Steps will perform its politically charged musical satire at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. The congressional staffers-turned-comedians travel the nation lampooning the people and institutions that once employed them. The Capitol Steps formed in 1981 when three staffers for Sen. Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. They scanned the headlines and created song parodies and skits conveying a special brand of humor that has proved popular all over the country. The current cast has at one time or another staffed the offices of 11 U.S. senators and seven members of the House of Representatives. They constantly monitor events and personalities on Capitol Hill, the Oval Office and other centers of power and then take a humorous look at serious issues. Over the past 20 years, the Capitol Steps have appeared on "Good Morning, America," the "Today" show," "20/20," "Entertainment Tonight," "Nightline," and CNN's "Inside Politics," and dozens of times on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." Over the past decade, the group has produced quarterly specials for public radio and has been featured in three national specials for public television. It has given more than 4,500 performances in 48 states and recorded 22 albums. A limited number of tickets are available in advance, $15 for general admission and senior citizens; $10 for Johns Hopkins students and staff. Any remaining tickets will be available for purchase at the door for an additional $2 per ticket in each category. Group discounts are available. To order tickets or for information, call the Office of Special Events at 410-516-7157. The event is presented by the dean of student life, the Parents Association and the Office of Special Events.
