Santa Fe Guitar Quartet to Perform at Evergreen

The Evergreen Carriage House Concert Series continues its 50th anniversary season with a performance by the Santa Fe Guitar Quartet at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in the Carriage House on the grounds of Evergreen House, 4545 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

The Santa Fe Guitar Quartet is an innovative ensemble with a repertoire from baroque and classical works to tangos and South American folk songs. The group is also committed to performing Latin American music, especially the works of Astor Piazolla. The quartet's full sound resembles that of a small string orchestra and has been described by The Washington Post as "big, warm, round and clear." The group employs a variety of unusual tunings, nearly doubling the normal range of the guitar to almost seven octaves. This expansion allows the musicians to play a variety of masterpieces at original pitch while providing larger works with a full sound resembling a string orchestra. The quartet has been hailed for its exquisite sensibility, refinement and artistic discipline.

The Santa Fe Guitar Quartet combines the talents of three players from Sante Fe, Argentina -- Nestor Ausqui, Mariano Fontana, Miguel Piva -- and one from New Mexico, Eric Slavin. They have been touring the Americas since 1989 with sponsors such as the Organization of American States, Partners of the Americas and the Mid-America Arts Alliance.

The Evergreen Carriage House Concert Series is sponsored by the Evergreen House Foundation in honor of its founder, Alice Warder Garrett. Garrett lived at Evergreen House from 1920 to 1952 and was a patron of the arts. She supported a resident string quartet each spring and fall from 1928 to 1942.

Admission to the concert is $15 per person and includes a reception after the performance to meet the artists. Evergreen fellows, contributors and patrons are admitted free with one guest. To make reservations or for more information, call 410-516-0341 or visit http://www.jhu.edu/historichouses.
