U.S. Space Program Explored in Lecture
at Johns Hopkins

Author Howard E. McCurdy will examine NASA's triumphs and tragedies in his lecture "Faster, Better, Cheaper: Low- Cost Innovation in the U.S. Space Program," at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in Shriver Hall Auditorium on the Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

Based on his Johns Hopkins University Press book by the same name, McCurdy's lecture will recount the recent efforts by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to save money and improve mission frequency and performance through 16 missions in the 1990s. Copies of Faster, Better, Cheaper: Low-Cost Innovation in the U.S. Space Program will be available for sale and signing after McCurdy's talk.

McCurdy is a professor of public affairs and chair of the public administration department at American University. Public management, organization theory, public policy and financial management are the focus of his teaching and research. An expert on space policy, he's also written Inside NASA, a study of the organization's culture, which won the 1994 Henry Adams prize in recognition of an outstanding publication on the federal government's history. McCurdy is also the author of Space and the American Imagination, and is co-editor of Spaceflight and the Myth of Presidential Leadership. McCurdy has appeared on "The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer," National Public Radio and "NBC Nightly News." He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Washington and his doctorate from Cornell University. A digital photo is available via e-mail to amycowles@jhu.edu.

This event is part of the Wednesday Noon Series presented by The Johns Hopkins University Office of Special Events, now in its 38th season of cultural programming on the Homewood campus. The event is co-sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Press and admission is free. For information, call the Office of Special Events at 410-516-7157.
