Renowned contralto Ewa Podles and pianist Ania Marchwinska will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17, as part of the 2004-2005 Shriver Hall Concert Series in Shriver Hall Auditorium on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore. Podles has performed in every major opera house in the world, and with the San Francisco Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Seattle Symphony, Montreal Symphony, and Moscow Chamber Orchestra, among others. Podles has given recitals in Paris, Amsterdam, London, Toronto, Warsaw, Quebec and New York. For her Shriver Hall appearance, Podles will perform Rossini's Giovanna D'Arco, which she sang in February to a sold-out crowd at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Brahms will round out her Shriver Hall program. Polish-born pianist Ania Marchwinska frequently collaborates with Podles. She earned master's degrees in piano performance from the F. Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and Stanford University and a master's degree in accompaniment from The Juilliard School. Marchwinska also works as a principal vocal coach at Opera Narodowa in Warsaw. Tickets are $33 adults, $17 students, and $8 student rush one hour before the show. For information, call 410-516-7164.
