Mistress of Riversdale at Jewish Community Center

Theatre Hopkins, in cooperation with the Jewish Community Center of Greater Baltimore, will present "Mistress of Riversdale" at 2 p.m., on Sunday, June 11. The performance will take place at the Morstein Performa in the Adalman Auditorium at the Rosenbloom Owings Mills JCC, 3506 Gwynnbrook Rd.

Adapted from the original words in the letters edited in Margaret Callcott's book, this one-woman dramatization was devised by Suzanne Pratt, director of Theatre Hopkins, and is performed by Cherie Weinert. It details the life of wealthy Belgian émigré Rosalie Stier Calvert, wife of George Calvert, at their estate near Washington during the first two decades of the 19th century.

The text is drawn directly from extraordinary letters Rosalie, mother of nine children, sent to her family in Antwerp over her 20 years at Riversdale. Rosalie's correspondence includes her frank and ardent views on presidents Washington, Jefferson, and Monroe as well as Napoleon, Aaron Burr and Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte. Also detailed is her courtship and marriage to the grandson of the fifth Lord Calvert and their creation of the Riversdale estate. It not only lent its name to the Washington suburb, Riverdale, but also provided the original campus of the Maryland Agricultural College, which later became the University of Maryland, College Park.

On-site free parking is available. Tickets are $10 and may be reserved by calling Theatre Hopkins at (410) 516-7159; or by email at: thehop@jhu.edu.
