Arthur Danto to Speak to Present Israel Rosen Lecture

Art critic and philosophy professor Arthur Danto will present the 1995 Johns Hopkins University Israel Rosen Memorial Lecture, "From Aesthetics to Art Criticism," Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Art Museum Drive. The annual free lecture, which focuses on 20th century art topics, is sponsored by the Johns Hopkins University Department of the History of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Danto, the Johnsonian Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Columbia University and art critic for The Nation, has written award-winning books on philosophy and art. His most recent works are Embodied Meanings, a book of essays on art philosophy and art criticism and Playing With the Edge, a collection of essays on Robert Mapplethorpe.

The lecture series was established in 1989 with a gift from Selma Rosen in memory of her husband, Dr. Israel Rosen, a Baltimore physician who had a passion for 20th century art. During his lifetime, Rosen, a Hopkins alumnus, had collected over 100 paintings by artists such as Picasso, Klee, Braque and Mondrian.
