Sister Helen Prejean to Speak at Hopkins
Prejean's involvement with poor, inner-city residents of New Orleans led her to a prison ministry, where she counseled death row inmates in the Louisiana State Penitentiary. Since that time, she has devoted her energies to educating the public about the death penalty through lecturing, writing and appearing on television. Her best-selling book, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, bacame the basis for an Academy Award-winning film starring Susan Sarandon.
Prejean has befriended murder victims' families, and helped found Survive, a victims' advocacy group. Currently, she is at work on a book about women's struggle for equality within the Roman Catholic Church.
Prejean will be introduced by Mark Steiner, host of WJHU's The Mark Steiner Show.
