Evergreen Opens The Collectors Series

A series of events at Evergreen House have been planned as part of The Collectors Series.

At 6 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28, Charles Camp, state folklorist at the Maryland State Arts Council, will give a lecture titled "The Culture of Collecting," which will look at what drives people to collect.

At noon on Friday, Jan. 29, Jay McKean Fisher and Susan Dackerman, senior curator and associate curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the BMA, respectively, will present talks on "George Lucas: A Nineteenth Century Collector of Contemporary Art," and "Building a Collection: The Garrett Print Collection of the BMA." Lunch will follow the talks.

At 5 p.m., an exhibition of prints by contemporary artists, exploring the oldest and newest print media, "Narratives in Print," will open with a reception.

On Saturday, Jan. 30, The Collectors Series continues with programs at the BMA and Goya Girl Press. From 10 a.m. to noon , Dackerman will give a private gallery talk titled "The Pious and Profane: Looking at Renaissance Prints at the BMA," featuring prints in the exhibition from the Garrett collection. The talk, by BMA's assistant paper conservator, Tom Primeau, will be followed by a discussion of conservation problems inherent to prints. The afternoon program, "Printmaking at Goya Girl Press," will be from 12:30 to 3 p.m. at the Mill Center in Baltimore. The program will include lunch and a demonstration of several types of print media including etching, lithography and new intaglio methods, featuring solar etching by Martha Macks, president of Goya Girl Press.

Finally, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7, Cindy Kelly, curator at Evergreen House, will present a gallery talk on the exhibition, "Narratives in Print."

Admission to "The Culture of Collecting," with Charles Camp on Jan. 28 is $8 for Evergreen members and $10 for non-members. Admission to the Jan. 29 talks and lunch with the speakers is $20 for Evergreen members and $25 for non-members. The Jan. 29 opening of the exhibition "Narratives in Print" is free to the public. The Jan. 30 morning program, "The Pious and Profane: Looking at Renaissance Prints at the BMA" is $10 for Evergreen members and $12 for non-members. The afternoon program, "Printmaking at Goya Girl Press" and lunch is $15 for Evergreen members and $20 for non-members. The Feb. 7 gallery talk is free with museum admission.
