James Barclay Knapp Deanship
Dedication Ceremony

Faculty, students, alumni and friends of Johns Hopkins University joined together in Bloomberg Auditorium on Monday, March 27, 2000 to dedicate the James Barclay Knapp Deanship for the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Michael Bloomberg, chair of the board of trustees; William R. Brody, president of Johns Hopkins; Richard McCarty, the James Barclay Knapp dean; Steven Knapp, provost; and F. Whitten Peters, secretary of the Air Force, made remarks on the deanship and the man it honors, James Barclay Knapp.

J. Barclay Knapp, of Princeton, N.J., and a 1979 graduate of Johns Hopkins, has donated $10 million to endow a deanship named in honor of his late father, a prominent and highly decorated general who served for 33 years in the U.S. Army and, after it was established, the U.S. Air Force.

The event was video taped and can be viewed in RealVideo format here:

Barclay Knapp is a member of the board of trustees. He is president and chief executive officer of NTL Inc. The New York- and London-based company is one of the largest operators of cable and telephone systems in the United Kingdom with more than 1.4 million customers.

Knapp is also president and CEO of CoreComm, a U.S. version of NTL. He is a 1983 graduate of the Harvard Business School and began his career by founding, with two partners, Cellular Communications Inc., which became in 1986 the first publicly traded cellular phone company in the United States.
