Israeli Stem Cell Scientist Will Take Part in
Johns Hopkins-Technion Conference on
Biomedical Research Breakthroughs

Computational Medicine, Tissue Engineering,
Image-Guided Surgery and Medical Robotics Will Also Be
Discussed at International Symposium

WHEN: Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 11-12, 2001.
WHERE: Clark Hall, The Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus, 3400 N. Charles St., Baltimore, Md.
WHAT: Leading biomedical scientists and engineers from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology will discuss important avenues of research during a two-day program. Among the participants will be Dr. Lior Gepstein, one of the leaders of a Technion team that recently reported that it had grown the precursors to human heart cells from human embryonic stem cells. The National Institutes of Health last month identified the Technion as one of 10 laboratories worldwide that possess stem cell lines that meet President George Bush's criteria for use in federally funded human embryonic stem cell research. Gepstein will present a 20- minute talk on his work Tuesday afternoon. Other speakers will discuss their research in leading edge areas such as computational medicine, tissue and cell engineering, image- guided surgery and medical robotics.
WHY: This founding symposium is the result of an agreement adopted last year by Johns Hopkins and the Technion. The pact calls for joint medical science and biomedical engineering research projects and an exchange of faculty members and students.
To obtain a symposium agenda or arrange an interview, please contact Phil Sneiderman at (410) 516-7907.
