Photos of Student-Designed Whitewater Helmet
[All photos by Will Kirk unless noted otherwise.]

Photo D: To test how their helmet would perform in fast-moving water, students Michael Cordeiro and Chang Lee strapped the prototype onto a dummy's head, fastened it to a wooden frame, marked the helmet's position on the dummy and put it in the path of a high-pressure fire hose.

Photo E: Chang Lee aims the fire hose at the prototype helmet to determine if how it will respond to the forces of a whitewater stream.

Photo F: During the fire hose test, the prototype helmet stayed in place atop the dummy's head.

Photo H: Chang Lee

Photos I and J: These are photos of Lucas Brandon Turner, whose death during a kayaking incident inspired the Johns Hopkins students to develop a helmet that may offer better protection against head injuries.
