"When Religion Becomes Evil" Lecture at Johns Hopkins

Renowned religious professor and Baptist minister Charles Kimball will give a free lecture at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 1, in the Johns Hopkins University's Bunting- Meyerhoff Interfaith and Community Service Center on the corner of North Charles Street and University Parkway.

Chair of the Department of Religion at Wake Forest University, Kimball will discuss "When Religion Becomes Evil," also the title of his 2002 book, which was named by Publishers Weekly as one of the top 15 books on religion for 2002. Kimball is considered an expert analyst on issues related to the Middle East, Islam, Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations and the intersection of religion and politics in the United States. Since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he has been interviewed by approximately 200 TV and radio stations and major newspapers throughout the world. His articles have appeared in publications including The Los Angeles Times, The Christian Science Monitor and The Boston Globe. His other books are Striving Together: A Way Forward in Christian-Muslim Relations; Religion, Politics and Oil: The Volatile Mix in the Middle East; and Angle of Vision: Christians and the Middle East. A digital photo of Kimball is available upon request; send an e-mail message to amycowles@jhu.edu.

Kimball's lecture is part of the Johns Hopkins University's third annual religious awareness days, Open Hands Open Hearts, a series of events fostering open discussion on matters of faith for students, faculty and staff on the Homewood campus. Events are scheduled Sunday, Feb. 29, through Tuesday, March 9. Presented by the Religious Awareness Days Steering Committee, Open Hands Open Hearts is produced under the auspices of Campus Ministries and is the result of a collaborative effort of the Interfaith Council, Campus Ministries and student representatives from a variety of Johns Hopkins faith organizations.

Kimball's lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Campus Ministries at 410-261-1880.
