Baltimore Area Middle School Girls to
Get Introduction to Engineering
Johns Hopkins Students Will Help Young Visitors
Build Assistive Technology
WHEN |
Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005. Morning session
from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; afternoon session from 1:30
to 4:30 p.m. |
WHERE |
The Great Hall inside Levering Hall, at The
Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles
St., Baltimore, Md. |
WHO |
Women engineering students at Johns Hopkins
are the primary organizers and volunteers for "Ready Set
Design!" a program set up to interest more girls in
engineering careers. About 120 girls from middle schools
in Baltimore city and neighboring counties have registered
to attend. (The morning session is expected to draw 80
girls; about 40 are expected in the afternoon. Girls will
attend one session or the other; the content will be the
same.) |
WHAT |
Johns Hopkins
engineering
students will
help the young visitors with assistive technology
assignments. These may include building a device to enable
people with limited use of their arms to brush their
teeth; or modifying a bicycle or sled for people with
physical disabilities. The college students will guide the
middle school students, working in small teams, through 12
such projects. |
WHY |
The engineering field has a gender
diversity problem: too few women are entering the
profession. To help correct this imbalance, organizers of
this event want to introduce women engineers and
engineering projects to middle school girls whose minds
are still open to non-traditional career paths. |
