More than 500 day campers from Chicago area YMCAs will participate in a special field trip to the museum to mark National Summer Learning Day, sponsored by The Center for Summer Learning at The Johns Hopkins University, the JCPenney Afterschool Fund and the YMCA of the USA. Summer Learning Day is designed to showcase the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of young people and their families. Each year, the Center for Summer Learning works with organizations across the country to highlight the critical role summer programs play in: Speakers include Jesse Ruiz, chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education; Elliot Regenstein, director of Education Reform; Ron Fairchild, executive director of the Center for Summer Learning; Ken Gladish, national executive director of the YMCA of the USA; and Julie Berkhouse of the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. In conjunction with the event, the JCPenney Afterschool Fund and Workman Publishing will donate more than 9,000 Brain Quest educational games to kids at YMCA summer programs throughout Illinois, including the 500 children attending Thursday's event. Since 1999, JCPenney and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund have given more than $1.3 million to afterschool organizations in Illinois. For information, contact Amy Cowles at (443) 287-9960 or Ron Fairchild at (410) 516-6221.
