Spaghetti Bridge Contest Set for
Nov. 5
Students Will Put Pasta Spans to the Test on
Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus
WHEN: |
Sunday, Nov. 5, 2005
Bridges go on display at 1:30 p.m.; Weight competition
begins at 3 p.m. |
WHERE: |
The Glass Pavilion, Levering Hall, at The
Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles
St., Baltimore, Md. |
WHAT: |
Johns Hopkins students, working in teams of
two or three, are designing and building about 13 model
bridges, using only spaghetti and glue. At Sunday's event,
the bridges will be tested to see which can hold the most
weight before it breaks. To date, the best student bridge
has held 64 kilograms (140 lbs). |
WHY: |
Freshmen enrolled in an introductory course
called "What is Engineering?" learn important engineering
concepts while designing and building a sturdy pasta
structure. Those who build a bridge that can hold at least
10 kilograms (about 22 lbs.) are excused from the final
exam. Also, the winning team receives $100. |
NOTE: |
Spectators are welcome. Admission is
free. |
