Harrington Promoted to Professor

Joseph E. Harrington Jr., a faculty member in the Department of Economics at The Johns Hopkins University, has been promoted to the rank of professor.

The university's board of trustees, at its May meeting, approved the promotion, which takes effect July 1.

Dr. Harrington is a leader in two disciplines, said Matthew Crenson, acting dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins. He works both in economics, where his specialty is industrial organization, and in political science, where his special interest is formal political theory.

"His ability to make significant contributions in two disciplines, as he has done, is a mark of genuine achievement and distinction," Dean Crenson said.

Dr. Harrington joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1984 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1990. In 1990, he received the Duncan Black Award for the best paper published in the scholarly journal "Public Choice." He serves as editor of the "International Journal of Industrial Organization" and co-editor of the "Journal of Economics and Management Strategy."

Dr. Harrington is a 1979 graduate of the University of Virginia and earned his Ph.D. in economics from Duke University in 1984.
