Hufferd Named Director of Chemical Propulsion Information Agency

William L. Hufferd, who has more than 30 years experience in solid rocket motor structural design and analysis, has been named director of the Chemical Propulsion Information Agency at The Johns Hopkins University. He replaces Thomas Christian, who retired after directing CPIA for over 10 years.

CPIA, a Columbia, Md.-based information analysis agency in the fields of chemical, electrical and nuclear propulsion technologies, is a center within the university's Whiting School of Engineering. It serves approximately 250 U.S. government, industry and educational customers by providing information exchange services and products.

"Bill Hufferd has an unparalleled record of accomplishment and a stellar reputation within the industry," said Douglas M. Green, associate dean for research in the School of Engineering. "Under his stewardship, CPIA will continue to provide timely service to the propulsion community by compiling, analyzing and disseminating essential propulsion information."

Before coming to CPIA, Hufferd had, since 1992, been manager of the Propulsion Sciences, Research and Engineering Department in the Chemical Systems Division of United Technologies Corp. in San Jose, Calif. He had been a United Technologies employee since 1984, serving in management and engineering capacities. Earlier, Hufferd was an engineering consultant and an associate professor of civil engineering at the University of Utah.

He is affiliated with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Society of Engineering Science, the Adhesion Society and the American Academy of Mechanics. He has been an active in the Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) Structural & Mechanical Behavior Subcommittee, and has edited or written JANNAF handbooks.

Hufferd and his wife reside in Columbia, Md.
