JHU Dean Will Deliver Thurston Lecture at International Engineering Congress

Don P. Giddens, dean of the Whiting School of Engineering at The Johns Hopkins University, has been selected to deliver the prestigious annual Thurston Lecture at an international meeting of mechanical engineers.

Giddens will speak on "Engineering Education for an Increasingly Technological World" during the American Society of Mechanical Engineers International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, scheduled Nov. 17-22 in Atlanta.

The lecture was established in 1925 to honor Robert Henry Thurston, the first president of the ASME and a leader in science and engineering. The lecture provides an opportunity for a leader in pure and applied science to address the society on a subject of broad technical interest to engineers.

Giddens joined Hopkins as dean of the engineering school in 1992. Previously, he was director of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and co-director of the Emory/Georgia Tech Biomedical Technology Research Center. At Georgia Tech, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in aerospace engineering in 1963 and 1965 and his doctorate in 1967. Giddens has served as chairman of the ASME Biomedical Engineering Division and is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers.
