"Meet the Critics" Series Brings Top Critics to Hopkins

The annual series, organized by Ghita Levine for the School of Continuing Studies' Odyssey program, is open to the public and all sessions allow plenty of time for questions from the audience. Advance registration is required. Call (410) 516-4842.

Oct. 15 Bill Carter, television critic of the New York Times, opens the series with a discussion of the business of television.

Oct. 22 Leonard Slatkin, music director of the National Symphony Orchestra, who has greatly changed the programs and the accessibility of the orchestra, will discuss the future of live music. (Please note date change from original Odyssey program brochure).

Oct. 29 Stephen Hunter, longtime film critic for the Baltimore Sun now at the Washington Post, will show film clips to illustrate what's happened to the movies.

Nov. 5 Robert Brustein, legendary theatre critic for the New Republic, founder of both the Yale Repertory Theatre and the American Repertory Theatre at Harvard, comes from Cambridge, Mass. to talk about the life and challenges of a theatre critic.

Nov. 12 Jonathan Yardley, author and outspoken book critic for the Washington Post closes the series with a no-holds-barred critique of the publishing world.

A special Book Bash, hosted by the Johns Hopkins University Press, precedes the program from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy. Some of the area's top authors and their books on Maryland and the Chesapeake, personal health and other topics will be on hand.
