Charlene Moore Hayes, currently associate vice chancellor for human resources at North Carolina State University, has been appointed vice president for human resources at The Johns Hopkins University.

Hayes, a human resources professional for nearly 20 years, will join the university no later than Nov. 1, succeeding Audrey Smith, who will retire Sept. 2 after seven years at Johns Hopkins.

"Charlene is team-oriented, focused on the 'we,' not the 'I,' approach to issues," said James T. McGill, senior vice president for finance and administration, to whom Hayes will report. "Like Audrey Smith, she particularly values customer service-oriented human resources practice; she will work to ensure that Human Resources at Johns Hopkins is seen as a valuable partner to the university's employees and to its schools, departments and offices."

Hayes has been North Carolina State's chief human resources officer since January 2000. She previously worked for nine years at Purdue University, where she held a series of increasingly responsible positions before becoming director of personnel services, the university's chief personnel officer. She began her human resources career in 1984 as a labor/employee relations specialist in Maryland's Montgomery County government.

Hayes said her priorities include continuing to press Smith's initiatives promoting institutional diversity and contributing to the effort of the Johns Hopkins Institutions -- the university and the health system together -- to design and execute HopkinsOne, an enterprise-wide business systems project.

"Personally, my goal in facing any problem is to work with the people who are involved and come up with a solution that best fits the needs of as many people as possible," Hayes said. "What relationship building is all about, in my opinion, is getting people to come to a consensus on an approach, and I hope my ability to do this will serve Johns Hopkins well."

Hayes grew up in Holly Springs, Miss. A 1978 graduate of Cornell University, where she majored in Africana studies, she earned a law degree in 1984 from George Washington University. She is married to Floyd W. Hayes III, an associate professor of political science and multidisciplinary studies at North Carolina State. The couple has four children.
