Subject: Christmas Eve observance at the grave of Johns Hopkins
Annual event marks anniversary of founder's death
When: 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 24
Where: Green Mount Cemetery (Enter at main gate on Greenmount Avenue, south of North Avenue. Go uphill and to the right; park where cars are gathered and walk several dozen yards further on to the Johns Hopkins gravesite.)
What: Employees of The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System will gather at the grave of Mr. Johns Hopkins on Christmas Eve to mark the 131st anniversary of his death.
Details: At his passing on Dec. 24, 1873, Mr. Hopkins left $7 million in his will to establish the university and Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the time, it was the nation's largest-ever philanthropic bequest. Annually, a group of Johns Hopkins employees meet at his grave on Christmas Eve to honor the man who vision and generosity created what is now one of the world's great universities and academic medical centers. The brief, informal service is organized by Ross Jones, vice president and secretary of the university.
