Johns Hopkins University Names Janet Sanfilippo Director of City, Community Relations

The Johns Hopkins University has named assistant provost Janet Sanfilippo director of city and community relations. In her new post, Sanfilippo will work actively to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of groups and individuals important to the university including neighborhood groups, civic associations, area businesses, members of the Baltimore City Council and the mayor s office.

"Janet has built a variety of university-community relationships, both here and in Durham [N.C.], while she was at Duke University," said James McGill, Hopkins senior vice president for administration. "Her strength in developing collaborative and cooperative partnerships convinced us that she was the right person to begin to focus and extend those activities for the university. We are delighted that she has agreed to take on this task."

Sanfilippo will be developing strategies to build, maintain and coordinate important connections with community groups, the city government, businesses and others.

"Urban universities recognize that strong affiliations with local governments and communities are vital," Sanfilippo said. "My job will be to make the most of those relationships, which should benefit all of us."

Sanfilippo has been an assistant provost since coming to Johns Hopkins in 1992. Previously, she worked for 17 years at Duke University, serving in a variety of positions including coordinator for community relations, director of special events and director of the alumni association for the School of Medicine. She ended her tenure at Duke as associate dean for administration at the Fuqua School of Business.

Throughout her career, Sanfilippo has been active in many community organizations, among them the Greater Homewood Community Corp., the Live Baltimore Marketing Center, the Durham Volunteer Services Bureau and the Greater Triangle (N.C.) Community Foundation.
