Emergency Notification Methods

The Homewood campus has several emergency notification systems to alert the University Community of any situation, natural or man-made, which might pose an imminent threat to safety.

Emergency Siren/Public Address System

There are Siren/Public Address devices located on the roofs of Garland Hall, Whitehead Hall, and the O’Connor Recreation Center.

In the event of an imminent threat, these sirens will be activated for 60 seconds, followed immediately by a voice announcement giving brief instructions.

Two siren tones are used on the Homewood campus. A High-Low Siren will be used ONLY for emergency situations and for system testing. A second tone, an Air Horn, will designate the all-clear after an event or test.

The systems will be tested three times a year – once in the Fall Semester, once in the Spring Semester and once during the summer. The tests will be announced well in advance through the Newsletter, the Gazette, the Daily Announcements and to local community organizations. The tests serve a two-fold purpose:

§  To ensure that the equipment is working properly, and

§  To familiarize the Homewood community with the sound of the sirens.

Concurrent with each of the siren tests, we will test the RAVE Emergency Alert system, which sends a Short Message Service (SMS) text message to the cell-phones of those who have subscribed to the service.

Should you hear the siren at any time, IMMEDIATELY stop what you are doing and pay close attention to the verbal instructions that follow. Obey those instructions and be alert for follow up information from the public address and the alert text messaging systems. Then wait for the all-clear signal to be given.

Also information will be available on  the University's Emergency Notices web page and an email will be disseminated to the faculty, staff and students.

If you are not yet a JHEA subscriber, you can sign up on the myJHU portal. After signing in with your JHED ID, go to the “myProfile” tab, click Emergency Alerts, update your information and select Receive Emergency Alerts. Remember to click “Save myProfile” when you are done.
