There are several ways to connect to alumni and research career information utilizing LinkedIn. LinkedIn is the Facebook for the professional world. Unlike Facebook, it is not a good idea to add all your friends as connections in LinkedIn. It is not about how many connections you have, but the quality of the connections you have, so be careful about who you add into your network.
The Career Center co-manages the largest Johns Hopkins University alumni group. Within that group, you can click on "More..." and select the Career Networking subgroups. You can join any relevant subgroup and connect with alumni working in various fields to network and obtain information about their career in a specific field.
LinkedIn Step by Step Guide
- Set up your LinkedIn profile. You can import your resume to help you do this.
- Join relevant groups. Join any relevant Johns Hopkins Alumni groups, industry groups, or professional association groups.
- Conduct "Advanced People" searches to find Hopkins alumni working in various fields and in specific geographic areas. Remember it is good to network with alumni and ask for information about their career and field, not ask for a job or internship. Try to build a relationship before asking for help.
