Looking into Trench B.

So, yesterday you saw us standing and staring into Trench B. Now you can see what we were looking at: stone running north to south across the trench, west of the large baked brick “wall”. The stone consists of small subpaving type pieces and large blocks set on an angle. The orientation of the stones is in line with that in Trench A south of the large stone “quay”. We appear to be closer to answering the question of whether the lake was surrounded by stone embanking. Yet the baked brick structures, which appear to contain the stone line, only appear in Trench B, despite the continued line of stone in A. We continue to work to define all architectural remains so as to understand the system used by the lake. Meredith, Ashley, and Violaine take levels in Trench C before the quay so that we may compare the various structures found in all squares.

The lake recedes.

As the lake continues to recede, engineers from the American Research Center in Egypt come to help us set up a water station to start desalination of anything excavated and also to allow us to wet sieve and then do flotation on the organic materials found. A clever idea was to buy a shower pan and hook up a water faucet to it. And voila! Tomorrow we’ll cover it with shade.

In the afternoon today, rather than drawing pottery, the students get instruction from Hiroko about basic conservation steps on site. This will help them have protocols in mind when things are found so that conservation is always on their minds – in addition to documentation.
