From the front to the rear are Ashley Fiutko, Maggie Bryson, Katie Cobb, Katherine Davis, and Marina Escolano Poveda, all graduate students. Kelly Cummings and Michael Riecken, our undergraduates follow behind, and Chris Brinker brings up the rear. Meredith Fraser, a seventh graduate student is under the weather.

Violaine and Betsy meet with Reis Farouk to discuss where excavation will begin and after a time squares are laid out.
Betsy describes some of the excavation findings in this area between 2003 and 2006 when a zone of industrial work, including grain storage, baking, brewing, and faience manufacture was discovered. The new squares to be laid out may well reflect this same environment.
Violaine then describes the process of excavation and, most importantly, the role of the square supervisors who must document the work in their notebooks. She painstakingly takes them through what they are expected to do.
A group of the students go on a shopping expedition to get equipment needed for the work to begin: trowels, brushes, string, etc. On the bus they discuss dividing up the duties. |

Two of Jay’s superb early morning shots captured workers clearing the halfa grass. But he somehow makes it a romantic setting. |
