Provost's Office Soliciting Original Undergraduate Research
Proposals

Full-time undergraduates interested in performing original
research are invited to submit proposals for the third Provost s
Undergraduate Awards for Research and Excellence. Recipients of
the award, to be announced this spring, will receive up to
$2,500, said Provost Joseph Cooper.
A portion of the funds is intended to cover expenses
incurred by students, faculty and departments in the course of
the research. In the case of Peabody students, the support is
meant for the costs associated with composition and performance
projects. Award recipients can choose either to receive up to
$1,500 of the $2,500 as a cash award, or to receive academic
credit for their work.
"The opportunity to do original work in a research-intensive
atmosphere is one of the most important advantages of attending a
school such as Hopkins as an undergraduate," Dr. Cooper said.
"These awards are meant to further encourage this kind of work
and to promote close interaction between undergraduates and the
faculty."
Current freshmen, sophomores and juniors in Arts and
Sciences, Engineering, Nursing or the Peabody Conservatory may
apply for the Provost s Awards. Applications are being accepted
until March 17 for projects to be undertaken this summer. April
10 is the proposal deadline for fall projects. Proposals will be
evaluated by a committee of faculty from the four participating
divisions, chaired by Ted Poehler, vice provost for research.
Applications are available from Dr. Poehler s office: 276
Garland Hall, Homewood. For further information, call 516-8495.
