SCOTT BENNETT APPOINTED YALE LIBRARIAN

Scott Bennett, director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at
the Homewood campus since 1989, has been appointed librarian of
Yale University. He will assume his new post Oct. 1.
As Yale librarian, Dr. Bennett will head the second
largest university library in the world. He will be directly
responsible for more than 20 Yale libraries including the
Sterling Memorial Library, the Beinecke Rare Book and
Manuscript Library and the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney
Medical Library.
"My years at Hopkins have been the most wonderful and
productive of my professional life," Dr. Bennett said. "This is
a great university, and it has been immensely challenging and
rewarding to be here. Yale, like Hopkins, is a great research
university, and I am attracted to it because it has one of the
dozen greatest research libraries in the world."
"Scott Bennett has served Hopkins with distinction,"
Provost Joseph Cooper said. "He is a consummate professional.
We are pleased he will have this new challenge at Yale."
As director of the Eisenhower Library, Dr. Bennett
conducted a successful $5 million endowment campaign for the
library's humanities collection and led projects to develop
client-centered services and strategic planning for the
library.
Dr. Bennett will succeed Millicent D. Abell, who is
retiring after serving as university librarian for 10 years.
"Central to Yale's worldwide reputation for excellence in
scholarship and research are the quality and distinction of our
extraordinary libraries," said Richard C. Levin, president of
Yale University. "We believe that Scott Bennett is well
prepared to lead us in the future."
A specialist in 19th-century British literature and
history, Dr. Bennett was assistant university librarian for
collection management at Northwestern University before coming
to Hopkins. He began his career as assistant professor of
English at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and
went on to serve as associate professor of library
administration there.
A fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies, Dr.
Bennett served on the Association of Research Libraries'
Preservation Committee and is currently on its Information
Policy Committee. He is a member of the Association of American
Universities' Research Libraries Task Force on Intellectual
Property Rights in an Electronic Environment.
