Kickoff Events Mark the Start of 1994 United Way Campaign

This year, the Hopkins United Way campaign hopes to raise
$556,000 in an effort that includes all major Baltimore
schools and divisions. The hospital, APL, SAIS and the
Bayview campus will conduct separate campaigns.
"Helping those in need is especially important now,"
said Alfred Sommer, dean of the School of Hygiene and Public
Health and 1994 university United Way chair. "In doing so, we
continue Hopkins' long tradition of helping our neighbors."
Two kickoff events will mark the beginning of the
campaign. A joint kickoff event for the university and the
hospital at the East Baltimore campus will be held from noon
until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, on the Turner Plaza.
The scheduled speakers are Dr. Sommer; Michael Johns,
vice president of the School of Medicine; James Block,
president and CEO of the Johns Hopkins Health System and
Hospital; and Sue Donaldson, the new dean of the School of
Nursing. In the event of bad weather, the kickoff will be
held under the Ross Building on Rutland Avenue.
The Peabody Brass Ensemble will perform, and a guest
celebrity is scheduled to attend. Children from the
Lafayette Square Community Center will greet those attending.
A second kickoff for all other schools and divisions
will be held from 10 a.m. until 10:30 Thursday, Sept. 22, in
the Shriver Hall auditorium on the Homewood campus.
University President William C. Richardson will speak, and a
celebrity guest is expected to attend.
The winner of Hopkins' campaign poster/slogan contest
was Dina Wasmer, publications coordinator in the Office of
Public Affairs in the School of Hygiene and Public Health.
Wasmer's winning slogan is "Hopkins is where the heart is!
Open your heart to the United Way."
