Robert J. Massa, who has directed undergraduate enrollment strategy and overseen related offices in Homewood Student Affairs since 1989, has been appointed vice president for enrollment and college relations at Dickinson College.

Massa, dean of enrollment at Hopkins since 1995 and previously associate dean for enrollment management, will assume the newly created position at the Carlisle, Pa., college this summer. He will be responsible for admissions, financial aid, college relations, alumni affairs, marketing, institutional research, career development and intercollegiate athletics.

He will report to former Hopkins colleague William Durden, who for 16 years headed what is now the Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth and is president-elect at Dickinson.

"It has been a real privilege for me to be associated with Johns Hopkins over the past 10 years," Massa said. "I will miss my colleagues deeply, and I will particularly miss the students with their incredible energy and their sense of commitment to Hopkins."

At Hopkins, Massa has overseen Homewood undergraduate admissions, financial aid, the registrar's office, enrollment research, International Student and Scholar Services and athletics. He and his staff have produced an 85 percent increase in applications for admissions and a 21 percent increase in undergraduate enrollment and, along with colleagues throughout Homewood Student Affairs and the Homewood schools, have contributed to an increase in students' self-reported satisfaction with their overall undergraduate experience. In addition, the academic quality of applicants for admission reached a 10-year high in 1999.

"We have made tremendous progress during this time in the promotion of undergraduate education, the quality of undergraduate life and the development of new and exciting programs," Massa said. "I am confident that the undergraduate experience on the Homewood campus will continue to flourish."
