Donations for the House of Ruth -- The Hopkins Women's Network is assembling a holiday care package for the House of Ruth in Baltimore. The House of Ruth provides emergency shelter (among many other services) to women and children who have been victims of domestic violence. Safety and Emergency Evacuation Plans for the Disabled -- Disabled faculty, students and staff of the university are invited to participate in creating for themselves an individualized safety and emergency plan offered by the Office of Health, Safety and Environment to assist them in reaching safety areas or in evacuating buildings in the event of fire and other emergencies.

The plan will identify safety measures that are specific for the individual's disabilities and locations in buildings that are frequently visited. For example, a student's plan may cover classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, student service areas and the like. Registration is required.

Holiday Traditions in Old Baltimore -- On Sunday, Dec. 12, a special package tour will feature five historic houses decorated for the holidays, as well as entertainment and refreshments provided by prominent local caterers and restaurants. Participants can visit Evergreen House, Homewood House, the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, Mount Clare Museum and the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion. Continuous bus service will be provided by Harbor City Tours, with free parking available at Evergreen or Mount Clare.

The event will run from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $12 for members of participating museums; $15 for non-members; and $8 for children.

Travel Fellowships -- The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures is accepting applications for two travel fellowships of $2,500 each, reserved for Hopkins graduate students in the humanities who need to be in Italy for their research.

The funds are intended to cover round-trip airfare and travel within Italy. Applicants must submit a CV, a description of their project and a letter of support by a Hopkins faculty member familiar with their work. Applicants should also demonstrate that the successful completion of their projects will require the use of Italian literary sources.

Funding for Pilot Projects -- The NIEHS Center in Urban Environmental Health announces the availability of funding of up to $15,000 for pilot projects conducted during the period of April 1, 2000, through March 31, 2001. The funding is intended to stimulate new lines of research on such topics as health impact of hazardous environmental exposures on populations of low socioeconomic status; early biological effects of environmental agents in urban populations; and community outreach and environmental health education.

Provost's Undergraduate Research Awards -- The 2000 Provost's undergraduate Research Awards will provide a number of grants to current freshmen, sophomores and juniors in the schools of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Nursing, and in the Peabody Conservatory.

The money may be used to pay the costs of the winner's research or creative projects. Winners may choose to receive up to $1,500 of the total award as a cash stipend or to receive academic credit for their work.
