To Your Health -- The Department of Occupational Health Services, in conjunction with Benefits Administration, is offering the following classes to Hopkins faculty and staff this fall.

Yoga:
Monday, Wednesday and/or Thursday, begins Sept. 13
6:15 to 7:15 p.m.
Cost: $25/$45

Muscle conditioning and toning
Tuesday and Thursday, begins Sept. 14
12:15 to 1 p.m.
Cost: $20/$40

Weight management
Wednesdays, begins Sept. 15
1 to 2 p.m.
Cost: $20

CPR: monthly adult "Heart Saver" classes, beginning in October, for certification or recertification

Seated massage: 15-minute seated massage by a licensed massage therapist at a reasonable cost (by appointment only)

Grants for Suicide-Related Research -- The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has provided Johns Hopkins with funds to support one-year grants for research related to suicide (using a broad definition of what might be related).

The grants are available for young investigators (students, residents, fellows and junior faculty through the rank of assistant professor). The research may be carried out in any area, department or school within Johns Hopkins, including but not limited to basic science, humanities, social sciences and clinical departments.

Run for Cancer -- The first annual 5K Run for Cancer will take place on Saturday, Sept. 18, starting at 9 a.m. The race, which benefits the American Cancer Society, will start outside Garland Hall on the Homewood campus. For more information, call Richard Burwick at 410-662-9011.


Teach English as a Second Language -- The Johns Hopkins International Society at JHMI is looking for individuals interested in volunteering to teach English two to four hours each week for the organization's English as a Second Language program. Classes are offered to students, faculty and staff of the JHMI and will begin in late September.

Orioles at Camden Yards -- The Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs is sponsoring "Hopkins Night at Camden Yards." The games--Orioles vs. Yankees--are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 28; Wednesday, Sept. 29; and Thursday, Sept. 30 and begin at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $13. Lecture on William Faulkner -- A free slide-illustrated lecture will offer fresh insights into the life, work and hometown of William Faulkner, marking the 50th anniversary of his Nobel Prize for literature.

The lecture, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., will be given by Nancy Norris, director of the Master of Liberal Arts program in the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education. It will take place in 3 Shaffer on the Homewood campus; a reception will follow.

Performance at Peabody -- Emily Skala, principal flute of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Peabody Institute faculty, will perform on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 8 p.m. in Friedberg Concert Hall. Skala will be joined by pianist Kirsten Taylor; soprano Linda Mabbs; Carolinn, Skyler who will play the glass harmonica; oboist Jane Marvine; violist Richard Field; cellist Alan Stepansky; and harpsichordist Webb Wiggins. The program includes music by Handel, Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Mozart and Reinecke.
