MCI Chairman to Give The Blumenthal Lecture

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Bert C. Roberts Jr., chairman and director of MCI WorldCom Inc. and a university trustee, will deliver the Blumenthal Lecture at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, in Mudd Hall. His presentation, titled "The Magic of Technology," is free and open to all.

Roberts, whose company is the second largest long-distance carrier behind AT&T, received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1965 through Hopkins' part-time engineering program. Currently, he is a member of the Whiting School of Engineering's National Advisory Council.

The Blumenthal Award and Lecture for Contributions to Management in Technology were established in 1993 by Sydney C. Blumenthal Jr., a 1937 Hopkins graduate, and his wife Mitzi. The award and lecture were created to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to management in technology and to allow these individuals to present their ideas to students in the Whiting School of Engineering and the greater Johns Hopkins community.

Past Blumenthal speakers have included Michael Bloomberg, president of Bloomberg Financial Markets, L.P.; Allan Huston, former president and C.E.O. of Pizza Hut Worldwide; Norman Augustine, former president of Lockheed Martin; and William Perry, former U.S. secretary of defense.
