Ready, Set, Lego!

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Noah Frankenhauser, John Monti and Samuel Pinkava of Greater Grace Christian Academy monitor the progress of their robotic surgery. The trio won top honors at the 2000 Surgical Lego Robot Competition held at the Wyman Park Building. The contest is held annually to give area high school students hands-on education and experience in engineering problem solving. Using Lego Mindstorms kits, students build a computer-based medical robot that must guide a needle through Jell-O and spear a grape, used to simulate a tumor. The four-day event is sponsored by the university's Engineering Research Center in Computer Integrated Surgical Systems and Technology.
