Obituary: Margot Bos Stambler, General Manager of Hopkins Symphony, Dies

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Margot Bos Stambler, general manager of the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra and a talented soprano, died June 24 of breast cancer at her Pikesville home. She was 37 and had been fighting the disease for almost five years. A memorial service was held July 15 at the university's Bunting Meyerhoff Interfaith Center.

Margot Bos Stambler grew up in Leesburg, Va., and was the sixth generation of her family to graduate from Oberlin College, where she earned a bachelor of music in voice and met her husband, David Stambler, whom she married in 1987. She received her master's degree from Indiana University at Bloomington and went on to study in the voice studio of Susan Dash in Philadelphia. Stambler's career as a singer included performances with the Rome Festival Opera, the Santa Fe Opera and the Loudoun and Hopkins symphonies.

She managed the Hopkins Symphony Orchestra for eight years, and for seven years served as organist for St. John's Lutheran Church in Westminster, Md. She was an enthusiastic gardener, enjoyed auctions and, along with her husband, was an avid collector of antique quilts.

In addition to her husband, a saxophonist and teacher, she is survived by her parents, Chuck and Marilyn Bos of Leesburg, Va.; sisters Karla Bos of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Lisa Bos of Philadelphia; and grandparents Ransom and Marian Whitney of Columbus, Ohio.

It was Stambler's wish that donations be made for restoration of the pipe organ at the Bunting Meyerhoff Interfaith Center, The Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21218.
