The university recently unveiled a 125th anniversary logo to serve as a visual reminder of the institution's upcoming milestone occasion. Throughout the coming months the insignia is intended to make its way onto everything from street banners and event posters to invitations and coffee mugs.
Created by the Office of Design and Publications, the logo will be in use from now until the end of the academic year 2001. The university officially celebrates the 125th anniversary on Commemoration Day, Feb. 19, 2001.
Ross Jones, vice president and secretary emeritus, said the 125th Anniversary Committee thought it appropriate to develop a logo for use throughout the year as a way to take note of the celebration.
"This is a very important time in the history of the university, and we want to call as much attention to the anniversary as possible," said Jones, committee chair.
The design elements include the founding date and anniversary year, Johns Hopkins' signature and the slogan created for the event, Knowledge. For the World.
Dennis O'Shea, executive director of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs, said the logo's composition is a reference to Hopkins' past, present and future, right down to the fonts used--Bodini, an early 19th-century typeface (the slogan); the more contemporary Bernhard Modern (the dates); and the founder's signature.
"The point of the design is that Hopkins is an institution where the present and the future are really built upon the past," O'Shea said. "Johns Hopkins' signature harkens back to our founding, and the brief statement describes what it is we do now and what we will be doing in the future: We create and disseminate knowledge for the purpose of making this world a better place."
O'Shea said that while there are no requirements to do so, the university encourages every department to use the logo on its printed materials and in the promotion of events.
Three variations of the design are available depending on its use, and stickers with the logo are available to place on existing products, such as stationery.
