Larry Benedict, Dean of Homewood Student Affairs, Takes New Post at MIT

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Larry G. Benedict, dean of Homewood Student Affairs since 1992, has been appointed dean for student life at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, effective Aug. 21.

In the newly created position at the Cambridge, Mass., university, Benedict will oversee resident life, student life, campus dining, the campus activities complex and athletics.

Announcing Benedict's appointment, MIT Chancellor Lawrence S. Bacow said, "During Larry's tenure, we will complete implementation of the recommendations of the task force on student life and learning. We will construct a new undergraduate residence, two new graduate residences, and a new sports and fitness center. We will implement our new residence system and begin student exchanges under the Cambridge-MIT Institute. Clearly, there is much work to be done."

At Hopkins, Benedict was responsible for admissions, financial aid, athletics, housing, dining services, student accounts, campus ministries, counseling, Greek life and numerous other functions. Students at Homewood recognized him on three separate occasions for contributions to student life and student activities.

Benedict, a Worcester, Mass., native who received a doctorate in education in 1973 from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, which he also attended as an undergraduate, has spent his entire career in student affairs, first at his alma mater, then at the University of Southern Maine and Hopkins.
