Former Sen. George Mitchell, D-Maine, spoke about his efforts to help bring peace to Northern Ireland after 800 years of bloody conflict, in a speech at Shriver Hall last Wednesday. Mitchell, who served for 14 years in the U.S. Senate, helped forge the 1998 Good Friday peace accord, which earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the German Peace Prize. Mitchell's talk, called "Solutions to Religious and Ethnic Conflict," was part of the 2000 Johns Hopkins Symposium on Foreign Affairs.
