Class of 2000 Leaves A Legacy of Fun

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The Class of 2000 is leaving behind a gift to the Homewood student body that is a bit of a departure. Instead of the more traditional sort of remembrance such as the engraved park bench, exercise equipment or memorial plaque, they chose to raise money to create a tradition: Millennium Week, an annual occurrence of socials and festivities held for the undergraduates.

The endowment will provide a week of activities that could include picnics, athletic intramurals, socials, concerts or even midnight harbor cruises, which were especially popular with the Class of 2000. The hope is to draw as many students from as many cultural and student groups as possible to the events.

Millennium Week will most likely be organized by members of the rising senior class, said Tom Noone, who co-chaired the Senior Class Gift Committee with senior class president George Soterakis.

"From the very beginning, ours has been a very social, very active class--probably one of the most involved classes the campus has ever seen," Noone said. "We very much wanted to contribute something to the university that reflected the personality of our class."
