Magazine Celebrates 50 Years

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

About 75 people, including many past staffers of Johns Hopkins Magazine, celebrated the magazine's golden anniversary at a champagne brunch held May 7 at Evergreen House.

Among the five editors on hand were founding editor Corbin Gwaltney '43, editor 1950-59; Bob Armbruster, 1968-71; Sue De Pasquale, 1994- ; Ronald Wolk, 1959-62; and Elise Hancock, 1972-94.

The event was part reunion, too, as past and present staffers traded anecdotes and war stories. Many paid tribute to founding editor Corbin Gwaltney and his "creative genius" in launching the venture.

Sue De Pasquale, current editor, announced the creation of the Corbin Gwaltney '43 Fellowship, which includes a stipend and will be awarded each spring semester to a graduate or undergraduate student who shows promise in magazine publishing. The fellow will work with each member of the magazine's staff to learn about all aspects of producing the magazine, including science writing, advertising, art direction, copy editing and photography.

"It seems a fitting tribute," De Pasquale said, "to the man who changed the world of alumni magazine publishing by doing all of these things himself."
